Performance Space One Step Closer
A PARK revamp is a step closer after architects were called in to oversee the £1.28million regeneration project.
Lowlands Recreation Ground, next to Harrow-on-the-Hill station in Lowlands Road, Harrow, will be transformed into a multi-use shared activity and performance space by the end of August next year.
Urban design and landscape architects Adams and Sutherland have been appointed to work on the scheme alongside Assemble Studios.
But, before a single brick has been laid, Harrow Council is urging traders and shoppers to think creatively and decide how they would like the one hectare plot to be used.
Shopper Steve Nichols, 45, of Harrow View, Harrow, said: "I think there is scope to have something quite good in that space. If it brings a few more people into Harrow and boosts trade, then it will be a good thing."
Feedback from the council's consultation will be used to put together the final plans by March 2013. They could include an outdoor performance space, a café, a play area and improved links across the park and into Station Approach.
The revamp will be paid for with part of the £1.8m Harrow Council secured through the Mayor of London's Outer London Fund with the remainder, boosted by council funding, used to transform Harrow Town Centre as part of a wider redevelopment programme that includes the redesign of pedestrianised St Ann's Road.
The council's portfolio holder for planning and regeneration, councillor Keith Ferry, said: "The council is pleased to have secured the services of a cutting edge architect renowned for public realm work.
"The redefined park with its outdoor performance space will provide a range of features that will provide a unique and magical place for culture and art to flourish in Harrow."
Adams and Sutherland director Liz Adams added: "It is a tremendous opportunity to both reinstate and reinvent Lowlands as an important open space for local people."
